Sixth Raagi Bhai Hira Singh Ji Keertan Competition (SYDNEY)


On 14th and 15th July 2007 Keertan Competition was organised in the memory of Raagi Bhai Hira Singh Ji in Sydney. A record number of 146 Keertanias performed in Solo, Group Shabad and Instumental groups.

There was a record participation (146) of Sikh youth between age groups of 3 years to 21 years.Solo Singing - Total participation 84 as detailed below: -Under 5 year = 5, 5+ to 8 years =10, 8+ to 10 years =16, 10+ to 12 years = 18, 12+ to 14 years = 12, 14+ to 17 years =21, 17+ to 21 years = 2 Instrumental - String Instrument like voilin & Dilruba and Table had 20 participants
STRING INSTRUMENTS 6 (1 in Dilruba & 5 in violin)
Tabla = 14

Group Jatha Singing had 5 Jathas with a total participation of 42
Chardikala Katha = 8
Bhai Mardana Ji Jatha = 10
Baba Sucha Singh Gurmat Keertani Jatha = 9
Bhai Kanhaiya Sevak Jatha = 6
Shruti Gurmat Sangeet Jatha = 9
So, total participation 84+20+42 = 146 (It is a record as in 2006 a total 133 children participated)

Children from Sydney, Canberra, Perth and Newcastle participated.
Special judge, Dr Jasbir Kaur of Punjabi Univ Patiala (India) blessed the children and shared her vast knowledge of Gurmat Sangeet with Sangat.

The standard of Gurmat Sangeet was very high and most of the children were equal or even better that professionals.

Important Note for Participants:
As announced earlier, the result of the 2007 Kirtan competition will NOT be declared this week-end (i.e. on 22nd July 07).The new date of the award ceremony will be announced very shortly. Keep an eye on following web site:
